Ha Ha Tonka on the Moon

January is normally a quiet time for new releases so on the Moon we are travelling back to an album released in 2013 but only brought to my attention last month thanks to the AV Club premiering a new video they released for the excellent title track. They are also pretty unknown here in Blighty - they do not even come up as being known to "the home of new music" BBC 6 Music which is a shame.

They describe themselves as "rock band from Southern Missouri who sit at the crossroads of Americana and indie, where Alabama meets Arcade Fire – shakes their hand and takes them out for a drink".

But the first track sounds very much like what Mumford & Sons fans would love as the opening number on their new album and this might well put off the too cool for school types these days but most of the rest if the album is more like WilcoFleet Foxes or Trampled by Turtles and all at their most melodic and innovative. All 12 songs are very good to brilliant with Arabella being one highlight that is similar but far better than the song of the same name released in the same month by the Arctic Monkeys - though it is a rare misstep by the greats from God's Own County.

It is their 4th album under the Ha Ha Tonka name and all are streamable and syncable from the usual places and so some further investigation will be required. They have also released an album every two years so there may well be a new one to look forward to this year.
