Moon Film Reviews : Victoria and Abdul & Goodbye Christopher Robin

Your Cultural Correspondent (Film) went to see 'Victoria and Abdul' with Mummy's review ringing in their ear: 'He's very handsome and very pleasant to look at'. And, indeed, dear readers, it cannot be denied that Mr Ali Fazal was certainly more easy on the eye than the real Munshi.

While the film was enjoyable, and the acting superb (an especial applauso to Mr Eddie Izzard who was a revelation as The Prince of Wales), Your Cultural Correspondent (Film), couldn't help feeling that it let itself down by playing the story for laughs. The subject would, we surmised, have merited a more serious interpretation. And would Queen Victoria really have described herself as having 'a billion citizens'? Subjects, surely?

Your Cultural Correspondent (Film) thinks that Miss Margot Robbie might well have now cornered the market on Mothers from Hell. Her performance in the excellent 'Goodbye Christopher Robin' was magnificent and brought to mind that outstanding performance of Miss Kristen Scott Thomas in 'A Handful of Dust'. An applauso too to Mr Domhnall Gleeson who was 'marv' as A A Milne. And, of course, not forgetting Master Will Tilston as Christopher Robin. It's not a happy tale, but it's one worth seeing, if for no other reason than to see the consequences of 'pushy parents'. O!
