Moon Film Reviews - Wonder and The Man who Invented Christmas

Your Cultural Correspondent (Film) thinks that 'Wonder' can be summed up in one word: 'wonder(ful)'. A very good story, a very good script, and very good acting all round, but particular praise for Master Noah Jupe as Jack Wills, Miss Izabela Vidovic as Via, and Miss Crystal Lowe for a barn-storming cameo as Julian's mother.

If Your Cultural Correspondent (Film) had one criticism to make, it would be that the film is a bit long. After all, there is only so much heightened emotion a person can take without them wishing it would end.

Your Cultural Correspondent (Film) did not set out to see 'The Man Who Invented Christmas' with 'Great Expectations'. Indeed, they expected to be rather dismissive of the piece. What delight then that the last film that will be seen in Blighty this year turned out to be rather enjoyable.

Apart from the terribly miscast Mr Dan Stevens as the badly written Mr Dickens (as another reviewer might say, 'Dan Stevens? He doesn't have the range') and the equally badly miscast Morfydd Clark as the equally badly written Mrs Dickens, Your Cultural Correspondent (Film) has little criticism to make of a film about one of their favourite books and films, not least because, with the exceptions mentioned above, the acting was top-notch, hardly surprising given its 'all-star' cast, and the presence of the sublime Mr Christopher Plummer. As you leave the auditorium you are left grappling with one of the great thesp questions of the age: has Mr Plummer ever failed to give satisfaction?
